The railing beside the observation tunnel felt rough against Hector’s fingertips as he and Grey stepped into the blue-grey glow. Their goal was simple: reach the long viewing bench before the feeding show began. A narrow gap had been left between two families, and the boys hurried toward it, the heavy magnifying glass that hung on a steel chain clinking at Hector’s side. He eased the glass onto the bench, but the polished surface had been tilted ever so slightly; the lens slid back toward his knees. Hector pushed it forward again, hoping the small act of benevolence—making room for Grey—would hold, yet the lens crept backward once more. He glanced at the timetable board; eight minutes remained. If the glass slipped again, they would lose their view.
A sudden lull in foot traffic persuaded a taller visitor to shuffle aside, giving Grey space. Hector looped the chain once around the railing—only a subtle change—then nudged the lens ahead. This time it stayed, yet the extra pull jerked the chain’s other end loose from a hook under the bench. The free link struck a plastic cup of feed pellets; the cup toppled, and light pellets pattered across the steel-grey seat. Each rolling sphere found the shallow groove along the floor edge and gathered speed like tiny silver marbles. One pellet tapped a rubber ball at a child’s feet; the ball began to drift down the gently sloped walkway, bright stripes spinning. An iron drain grate near the touch-pool basin caught the ball’s final bounce, halting the miniature parade before it reached the turnstile. Grey exhaled, then raised the glass toward the tank just as a school of sardines rifled past overhead. A thin column of bubbles drifted upward behind the curved glass.
Translation
