The pair leaned over the cart once it halted. Beneath the rippling surface, a miniature mangrove display spread outward, its intertwined roots molded from pale resin. Between the roots a shy glass shrimp kept sliding out of sight, hiding under a floating lily pad that rocked with every passing footstep. Fern lowered the sieve first, trying to lift the pad, yet the mesh caught light reflections instead of the creature. Cole tried next, tilting the sieve at a different angle, but an unexpected surge from the filter sent a swirl over the rim and pushed the lily pad beyond reach. Blue reflections scattered across the alcove wall while the timer’s numbers shifted again.

With only moments left before the feeding show, Fern grabbed one of the bamboo sticks meant for gentle guiding. She eased its smooth tip beneath the lily pad and nudged it toward the basin’s center. Just then a stronger pump cycle began; the water rolled in a diagonal wave and revealed the shrimp on open sand for a single heartbeat before it darted back into the roots. Their surprise sparked laughter, yet the announcer’s distant microphone signaled the next exhibit. They placed the tools where they had found them and moved on. Behind them the displaced lily pad kept drifting in lazy circles, stirred by pale currents that never paused.
