Story Content
English Original
"Flat rock here."
Luke pressed the damp shale against the narrow gap. The creek hissed around his boots, a thin rush rising to a sharper pitch where water squeezed between two fixed boulders. Dad leafed through a magazine nearby, its pages rustling like distant grass. Luke had stacked three rows of smooth pebbles before trouble began; every new layer deepened the upstream murmur and made the downstream riffle rattle louder. He lifted the slab again, but a brittle snap split the air, and a corner sheared off. The fragment clinked over stones and vanished under frothy ripples. The remaining piece sagged, dragged forward by the constant shush, then wedged crosswise, blocking his hand. The weight and awkward angle turned the stone into a sudden burden he could not lift, even after two grunts and a splash that dotted his sleeves.
He crouched higher on the clay lip, grass stems sighing each time he shifted. A hollow pop sounded as another pebble rolled from under the dam and dropped into the pool below, leaving a fresh leak that gurgled along the brittle slab’s crooked edge. He first tried to haul the slab free, yet the current slapped his fingers aside and kept tugging. At the same moment, a faint hesitation broke the water’s rhythm: flow paused, then surged when the upstream surface spilled over the junction between two larger rocks. Luke saw how each rub from the current shaved dusty flakes off the cracked shale. If those crumbs packed the leaks, the flow might slow without removing anything. He waited for the next brief lull, timing his move to the quieter note before the surge returned.
When that softer beat arrived, Luke tapped the slab. Chips rattled onto his palm, then trickled into the leaking seams; the water pressed them deeper, and the hiss faded to a low thread. One side of the gap was now being scoured less, yet another surprise drifted in—a battered plastic container slid downstream, bumped the bank with a hollow thunk, and wedged itself against the slab. Its light shell drummed gently, but its presence braced the brittle stone. Luke straightened, brushing grit from his knees; the dam held, and the upstream sheet already shivered more quietly. He turned toward the blanket. Behind him, the creek continued its uneven chant, tiny splashes overlapping the deeper hush beyond the bend.
Translation
