She paused to scrutinize the swirling water where the branch had failed; a miniature hurricane spun over a hidden pocket and drew softer clay into its eye. If she had kept packing clay alone, the softer patches would have washed away within minutes. Luke’s pile of thin shale pieces lay beside him, and one slab had split along a grain line, revealing a sharp wedge. Faye crossed to the shale outcrop, selected a similar slab, and used a smooth stick as a lever to crack off an even slice. The tool slipped once, numbing her thumb, yet the fragment finally sheared clean. She slid the shale under the arch of water, propped it with the broken branch, and watched the flow slow into a calm oval where the water strider drifted back.

Sunlight shifted; cool tree shadow crept over their ankles, and the clay that had seemed mushy began to stiffen. Working side by side without words, they layered more shale, each piece angled so excess water spilled into the new side pool instead of fighting the wall. Faye pressed the last slate plate in place, and a clear mirror of water formed behind the dam. The half-built wall that had dripped at noon now rose firm and glimmered with a generous stripe of darker clay.
