The current answered with an outpouring of clear water that lifted the middle stone, rattled it loose, and chased it downstream with a hollow plop. A straight stick beside him looked trustworthy, so he braced the gap from the bank, but the stick bent and slipped, leaving only grit on his palms.

A few moments later, a new problem rose from below: sand had been scooped out by the accelerating jet, and the whole row began to sag. One flat shale slab he had stacked earlier had been pinned sideways by that force, creating a narrow tunnel under the wall. Reed paused and watched the rhythm of the water, noticing it eased every few heartbeats when upstream ripples bounced off a driftwood pile. He waited for that softer beat; when it arrived he slid a broad, thin shale sheet under the drooping line first, then pressed damp clay around the edges before lowering the stones back in reverse order. The layered fortitude of the shale resisted the push, and the clay gripped like cool putty until the next pulse. If the sheet held, the upper pool would finally rise; if it slipped, everything would loosen again. A pale twig drifted past and snagged on the fresh seam, marking a crooked white line against darker, water-damp rock.
