"Watch this car race down," Theo said. The boy balanced a thumb-sized metal car at the slide’s rim, glare from the low sun bouncing off the silver bonnet. Dawn had left a frosted morning sheen on the smooth surface, and a few crystalline flecks still caught the light along the shadow-edge. He released the toy. Instead of rushing, the wheels squeaked and crawled, slowed by the thin damp film that shining warmth had already loosened from the frost. Pearl waited at the ladder’s first rung, so Theo fetched the car quickly, nodded, and stepped aside while she took her turn. His toes tapped the bright rubber mat until the slide cleared again; then he climbed back, nudged the car up half the track, and tried once more with a sharper push, his sleeve brushing the metal and leaving a dull streak where brightness had been.

Across the playground, shafts of light struck the slide’s spine more directly, and the remaining frost surrendered, becoming clear rivulets that ran toward the sandbox below. The slide had been coated with ice earlier, but now a continuous ribbon of water glimmered; each drop was momentarily overexposed before falling. Those drops splashed onto a wooden frame where a small watercolor landscape decorated Joy’s forgotten plastic bucket, its faded hills suddenly glossy. Wet sand darkened in irregular patches; steamless warmth lifted, enough to evoke a memory of seaside mornings for any observer passing the fence. Joy waited behind him, holding her own toy boat, so Theo wiped the centre line with his palm, angled the car a fraction left, and waited until she finished her glide. When his opening returned, wheels rolled more freely, yet at the bottom the growing puddle pushed a spray that flickered in sunlight and slowed the vehicle to a wobbling halt.

That spray spread farther, carving a thin channel that reached a heartwarmingcluster of glass marbles lying near the bucket; the marbles shifted, their reflected-gleam burst with colors as they rolled apart. Each tiny collision dimmed, then brightened again, like miniature lamps under water. Theo crouched, tracing the unexpected pathway with his finger; his eyes widened at how simple warmth had coaxed such a quiet chain. A cloud slid over the sun, dimming the penumbra around the slide and cooling the metal; the ribbon of water thinned at once, its descent almost stalling. He was reaching for the nearest marble while the shadow kept sliding across the sand.

遊樂場另一側，光束更直接打在滑梯脊背，剩餘的霜化成清澈細流，向沙坑奔去。滑梯早上曾被冰覆蓋，如今一道持續的水帶在強光中閃耀，每滴水落下前都被過度曝光。水花濺到木框上，一只印著水彩風景的 Joy 遺忘塑膠桶因而變得光亮；潮沙在不規則區塊中變深，無蒸氣的暖意升起，足以喚起路人對海邊晨景的記憶。Joy 拿著自己的玩艇排在他後面，Theo 用掌心抹去中心水痕，將小車略偏左，等她滑完才再次放行。車輪較順地轉動，但底部漲大的水窪濺起光閃的水霧，小車在其中晃動停住。
