English Original
Sand rasped against a bright green fortress-shaped mold as Theo tipped the first scoop inside the hollow shape. He pressed both thumbs along the ridged edges, trying to articulate the tiny towers printed on the plastic. When he lifted it, the walls slumped and crumbled into loose grains that scratched his palms. His quick shove shook the wooden frame of the sandbox, sending a vibration through the ground. Startled ants broke formation and poured across the neighboring plank in a bristling dark stream. Two nearby pigeons pursued the moving line immediately, wings flapping hard enough to scatter a paper cup against Theo’s ankle.
Wind slid across the open pond, turning the cup end over end until it reached the gravel path. Theo jogged after it, but a fresh gust flipped the cup across wet grass toward a waste bin. While he moved, clouds thickened overhead and the mild air cooled against his forearms. Near the bench area he stooped to gather a scatter of damp sketch pages from the ground. The same burst of air had peeled them from another visitor’s folder, and their edges felt soft and swollen with moisture. A pair of sparrows on the railing seemed to communicate through rapid chirps before darting away from the strengthening breeze. Theo used the rim of the bin as leverage, pushing the crushed cup and papers deep inside. Raindrops began to tick across the metal roof of the gazebo, and every uncovered seat was already taken by other walkers.
As the light shower grew steadier, Theo skirted puddles back toward the sandbox. One stray sketch page skimmed over wet sand and halted against the forgotten mold. Theo bent for the page; his fingers closed around the mold’s damp surface. Rain had already packed the sandbox sand into a heavy, clingy mass. He filled the cavity, smoothed the base, then tipped it without force. Nearby pigeons abandoned their chase as thicker drops drummed, and ants slipped underground. His free hand was already scooping fresh sand for another tower when the wind pushed a ribbon of spray across his wrists.
Translation
