English Original
"Why do all these tiny crumbs march in the same direction today?" Iris brushed a fingertip across three parallel trails on the counter. The repeating lines curved past the milk jug, skirted the jam jars, and stopped beneath the toaster’s chrome body. Its lever had been pushed down moments earlier, so residual warmth still rose. Owen leaned closer, his sleeve pressing the warm metal while the crumb tray slid out with a faint scrape. He had expected random specks, yet the tidy tracks invited inspection. Before either could speak again, the toaster snapped and launched two slices upward; both landed squarely on the crumb paths, as if drilled soldiers obeying the route. Iris lifted one slice and shook it, crumbs sliding back into their orderly rows.
A streak of apricot jam glimmered on the nearest jar, but its lid refused to budge when Owen tried a quick twist. The glass felt tacky, and each effort caused the jar to tilt against the cereal box. That box already leaned like a roof on a shallow slope. He grabbed a damp cloth for extra grip; the fabric slipped, nudging the box. Flakes rattled out, bounced off a cup, and scattered across the counter’s uneven wooden terrain. Iris steadied the box, yet more crumbs joined the earlier lines, doubling the puzzle. She pushed plates aside to clear space, though each shift risked clinking spoons or toppling the napkin holder. Time on the microwave display kept counting down, pale numbers reflecting in the kettle’s window.
When the milk jug shifted for pouring, a wet ring cooled Iris’s palm. The shining circle crept toward the same edge already claimed by the crumb trails. A small thought clicked inside both of them: the countertop was imperceptibly angled. Their breakfast outlook changed; those crumbs were not marching at all—they were quietly sliding. Owen tested the idea by standing a spoon upright and watching its handle drift a finger’s width downhill. With the minutes shrinking, they chose to work with the slope rather than fight it. Iris wedged a folded napkin beside the jam jars to block further escape. Owen then rotated the cutting board until its grain rose slightly upward. At last the toast met the jam cleanly, and nothing new spilled. Iris slid the empty napkin holder aside, revealing a faint sticky crescent shining on the laminate.
Translation
