Most trays on the counter lay scraped clean, but one flaky pastry still steamed behind the glass. A sparrow hopped along the outside sill, tapping its tiny claws against the cool pane. Warm air drifted from the kitchen pass-through and brushed Luke’s knuckles with a buttery film while he inched forward in the quiet queue. The crumb-dotted sill felt gritty under his fingertip when he lifted a fallen napkin for the child ahead. Metal sheets slid over rails with a muted rasp, and the baker’s padded palms pressed into soft crust, sending a gentle hiss across the space. Twilight glowed beyond the window, leaving the indoor lights brighter than usual; every sugar crystal sparkled like frost. Near Luke’s boot a crumpled strip of glossy paper—part of an old leaflet—fluttered each time the door opened and the bell rang.
With the line moving slowly, Luke began to ponder whether the single pastry would survive until his turn. The sweet smell carried him to breakfast memories, and a faint rumble shook his stomach. A customer ahead accepted the tongs, yet the glass shelf proved slippery; the pastry skidded and stopped askew. That small slide disheartened its delicate layers, leaving a shallow dent across the top. Luke straightened; he considered stepping away to read the specials board, but the sparrow changed his rhythm. The bird had seized the leaflet scrap, tugging at the slick corner with its beak. On the second pull, the paper tore, revealing a bright smear of jam stuck to its hidden side—so the bird had chased fruit, not warmth. Luke stayed in line. When his turn came, the pastry felt light and cooling in the waxed bag. He crossed back to the window and set the final crumb from the pastry that had been steaming earlier onto the sill, and the sparrow darted to it.
Translation
