A shallow tin slot on the window ledge showed only grainy dust where round oregano seeds had rolled the evening before. Finn leaned close; the slot rustled softly as air squeezed through the cracked frame, carrying the dry hiss of hanging herb stalks. He had already sorted half the table, yet the gap drew his focus because a torn packet had scattered basil into the same tray. Loose grains tapped the timber as he tipped the mixed pile into a small metal container, its rim chiming against the wood. Outside, Iris watered garden beds; every splash answered the container’s bright ring and then faded beneath the steady drone of bees moving across the sunlit patch by the doorway.
Suki crossed the cool stone floor, her sandals leaving a gentle scrape. She lifted two narrow strips of waxy paper and pressed them into the container until three cramped lanes had been created; the paper squealed against metal. Finn angled his wrist so the fresh walls could guide the seeds apart, and a second handful rattled down, beating the paper like light rain. Oregano and basil still crowded together, so he sprinkled dried basil crumbs, hoping the sharp scent would highlight differences; the crumbs landed with a dry shuffle and clogged the middle lane. Each new layer muffled the crisp taps, turning the once-clear rattle into a dull, confused whisper.
A hose valve clacked outside; water stopped, and the shed slipped into a brief silent retreat. From inside the crowded container came a faint scrape: a tiny bronze beetle crawled up through the crumb layer, flipping seeds aside like pebbles. Suki pinched the second waxy divider and lifted it free with a quick rip. The remaining two walls bowed inward, and seeds slid toward opposite ends, arranging themselves by weight while the loosened crumbs drifted to one side. Finn brushed the crumbs into a spare tray and poured the neat rows into their reference shelf. Max, Iris’s spouse, walked past the doorway tying tomato stakes, the cords thudding softly against his gloves. On the rain barrel, a wren snapped up a stray seed that had rolled outside and darted toward distant fields of lavender.
Translation
