A soft ping echoed as a loose pin struck the window glass. Across the cool, tightened sheet, a thin shadow curled, dark and fluid like quicksilver, even though no puppet stood nearby. Wren pressed both palms against the warm sill, watching the shape drift sideways while an autumn afternoon sun angled lower. Behind the sheet, Thea lifted a cardboard plume meant for a paper dragon, hoping the stranger would match its outline, yet the drifting curve stayed separate. They traded puzzled glances; then the loosened corner sagged, folding the shadow into two blurred halves. Thea tugged the fabric upward and smoothed it flat with quick strokes, but the pin slipped again, and the crease returned at once. If the sheet sagged again, they would lose the sharp outline completely, so Wren steadied the edge with her knuckles while Thea tried a slower, steadier pull.
The sun had slid another finger-width west when the same corner dipped a second time. Felix, trimming new shapes at the prop table, noticed and offered an extra pin; however, the children wanted to manage the repair themselves. This time Thea shifted her grip, sliding her thumb under the cloth for firmer support before easing the pin through a fresh spot in the frame. The sheet straightened, and the wandering curve snapped back into view—still unexplained. Wren leaned closer, spotting a cardboard squid wedged behind the shoebox; its long arm, bent upward, caught the light at an odd angle and cast the mysterious line. The initial riddle was only a forgotten prop. Laughing silently, she freed the creature and raised it behind the sheet, where its arms flared like a burst of ink around a cake-shaped puppet arranged for their cardboard surprise party. Shadows overlapped neatly now, and no fold cut the scene. Wren pressed the fresh pin through the fabric and into the frame, while a faint detergent scent lingered in the warm air.
Translation
