A faint drip tapped the observation tunnel’s smooth floor. Beside the shallow puddle, a dark, flipper-shaped smear clung to the cool glass, its edges already drying into fine salt grains. Emil brushed the spot with two fingers; moisture clung like thin gel before sliding away. The curved ceiling carried a slow parade of rays whose bellies skimmed the pane, leaving shifting shadows that felt grainy against the skin when he pressed his palm upward. Blue light rolled over handrails worn silky by thousands of visitors, and the low hum of pumps vibrated through his shoes.
Further along, a board above the sea-turtle station ticked toward the next feeding time. Emil hoped to reach the railing before the limited bench space vanished, yet the walkway narrowed where families paused for photos. Bodies moved shoulder to shoulder, fabric and plastic bags brushing his arms in a textured wave. Progress stalled; the benches ahead already held a tight row of spectators, their jackets forming a rich tapestry of damp nylon and wool. If he had squeezed onto that crowded edge, the quiet shapes on the tunnel glass would have stayed hidden. Stepping back, he noticed new streaks joining the first smear, forming branching lines that looked almost deliberate. Even the exhibit’s layout showed humility: low rails and an unobtrusive armchair beside a coral window invited quieter observation rather than grand viewing.
Emil dropped into the armchair; its upholstery felt cool, slightly gritty where salt crystals had settled. He lifted his sketchbook, and the rough paper caught droplets as they slipped from his cuff. Under the bench light the streaks gleamed lilac, not clear water at all but dye from maintenance markers leaching through a hairline seal. He traced the pattern, charcoal dragging softly across the damp sheet while rays above rolled on. Emil closed his sketchbook, leaving a pale lilac streak across the top sheet.
Translation
