Amber overhead light poured onto the seat, warming its grain like fresh toast while the tank itself glowed deeper blue. Holly balanced a sketch pad on her knees and aimed to capture the slow swimmer before the show began. The feeding schedule had been printed beside the tank hours earlier, yet a school group still drifted in, filling every front gap. From the nearby gift-shop marketplace corner, faint cheerful music drifted through an open doorway, mixing with the hum of hidden pumps. If that crowd grew thin, she could reach the railing, so she stepped onto the lowest bench slat for an extra view. A taller adult paused directly in front of her, and the turtle disappeared behind reflected shoulders and waving brochure edges.

A gap opened near the side panel, and Holly hopped down, shoes squeaking on the damp floor. She slid along the copper rail, cool moisture rolling under her fingertips. The angle showed clear glass under the arching roof, though there was nowhere to sit. Inside, a sand crab made a courageous dash at a drifting lettuce thread, then vanished under rust-toned pebbles. The turtle followed, its resilient shell catching honey light while a pump hissed behind the wall. Holly braced her pad against the rail and shaded the carapace with crimson ink. A thin jet escaped a joint above. One fat drop landed on her drawing, and the ink bloomed outward like spreading coral. She let the colour run and sketched around the stain.

She wiped the damp edge of the page on her sleeve. That bench, which had been empty before, now carried two bags, each bright with a plastic sailor inside a toy boat. One bag leaned against the other, and a loose ribbon fluttered under the amber spotlight while pumps hummed on. Somewhere deeper in the tunnel, children’s footsteps faded toward the jellyfish corridor, leaving this corner briefly quiet.
