Someone had already borrowed the only step-stool, so Jasper stood on tiptoe beside the stacked cages. Amber light from the heat lamp fostered a glowing pocket among the cedar shavings where two sandy hamsters slept, their backs touching like smooth pebbles. Behind him, fish tails undulated in copper-rimmed tanks while air pumps whispered. Jasper aimed to gauge whether the smaller wheel inside the enclosure would fit the habitat waiting at home, yet he also wanted a clear look at each hamster before choosing. He unclipped a measuring tape, slid its metal tongue through the cage bars, and stretched it across the wheel’s rim; the curved steel shone honey-bright as the numbers crept past fifteen centimeters.

The tape’s edge struck a perch bar and rang softly. Both hamsters twitched and vanished into a paper-tube tunnel, leaving only drifting bedding. Jasper blurted out, “Oh, sorry!” and winced at his own voice. The step-stool, now free, had been placed near the aquariums; its top was still warm from another visitor. He carried it over, but the tape remained halfway inside the cage, vibrating like a thin spring. If he had kept the tape inside any longer, the noise would have driven both animals even deeper. He chose a compromise: he marked the length with his thumb, retracted the tool, and pressed the same span against the outer wire to finish the measure in silence. With the figure stored in memory, he climbed the stool slowly, shoulders level, and waited. One hamster peered out, nose twitching, offering a partial view of its white blaze while the other stayed hidden.

A sudden screech from the parrot corner flared through the shop, and the curious hamster retreated, though its whiskers still quivered at the tunnel mouth. Jasper accepted the uneven result: an approximate wheel size and a momentary glimpse were enough for today. He stepped down, folded the measuring tape, and slipped it into his pocket, leaving the lamp’s amber glow unchanged inside the cage. The gentle hum of the aquarium filters drifted through the shop.

鸚鵡區突然尖叫，探頭的倉鼠縮回洞口，但細鬚還在抖動。賈斯柏接受這不完美的結果：大致的滾輪尺寸和短暫的一瞥已夠用。他下了踏凳，收起捲尺放入口袋，籠內的琥珀燈光沒變。水族箱過濾器持續發出的柔和嗡鳴在店裡飄散。
