The Second Marble's Push-

Story Content
English Original
Max lowered his knee to the carpet and released a glass marble from the bookshelf edge. It shot down the first plastic ramp, flashed under the lamp, then halted because a stack of picture books formed a makeshift barricade near the launch shelf. The adult beside the supply pile had been cutting a new cardboard trough, and the off-cuts lay scattered across the floor, blocking Max’s direct path to remove the books. He decided to work around the obstacle instead. Rolling onto his elbows, he taped the long straight tubes together haphazardly, smoothing coloured tape with quick wrist flicks. A tiny plastic knight, fixed in a pose of valor, watched from the shelf as Max clipped the final elbow joint into place.
A few minutes later, the adult lifted the finished trough and passed it over. Max slid it between two tubes, bridged the gap, and cleared the barricade away. He sent the marble again. It raced through the new section but slowed where the middle tube sagged; the sole wooden block beneath it had been nudged aside, leaving the section almost flat. The marble paused, rocked, and stopped short of the next downhill turn. Max’s shoulders drew forward with effort as he crawled to the block-support zone. He couldn’t find a taller block nearby, so he changed sequence rather than equipment. He positioned a second marble on the shelf, breathed once, then let both go in quick succession.
The first sphere rolled as before and stalled on the flat stretch. A heartbeat later, the second seemed to pounce down the ramp, striking the back of the stalled one. The paired weight overcame the friction; together they rumbled through the angled connector, skipped over coloured tape, and clattered into the landing bowl. Momentum carried the second marble on, and it escaped, rolling beneath the couch where darkness swallowed its shine. Max stayed prone, palm pressed against the warm carpet while vibrations faded through his forearm. A mild vanilla trace drifted from the shelf candle. The metallic ring from the bowl pulsed softly against the hush of the carpet.
Translation
