Glare Over the Garden Jar-

Story Content
English Original
A perforated jar lid, a coiled garden hose, and three uneven stepping stones lay between the porch light and the darkening lawn. Crickets traded bright chirps like tiny bells, and the lid tapped softly whenever Eli tilted the empty glass jar. He aimed to guide one radiant firefly inside before returning to the porch where his uncle sorted garden tools. The first obstacle arrived as glare. The smooth metal reflected the bulb’s yellow burst straight into his eyes, turning the garden beyond into a blur. Dew had already slicked his fingertips, so the twisting lid only squeaked and slipped, refusing to loosen. He had tried twice; each time the metallic ring answered with a shrill scrape that made nearby fireflies dim and drift away.
Eli stepped from warm stone to cool grass and felt his heel skid on the wet surface. The jar pitched, the tapping lid rang louder, and a squad of moths spun around the noise, their wings brushing glass with dry rattles. He steadied himself, then vaulted the rubber hose loop that snaked across the path, but the brief slip had sent the nearest firefly deeper into shadow. While waiting, he noticed the mirror-bright circle still clinging to the threads of the jar. Each time he shifted it, a thin stripe of light danced across the lawn. That stripe seemed to transmit tiny flashes, and the quick-witted idea surfaced: use the very glare that blocked his sight as bait.
He held the jar at chest height, tilted the lid just enough to spray quiet pulses of reflected light. A second later, the same radiant insect floated back, curious about the moving sparkle. Eli kept still; only the lid moved, spinning soft rings of brightness without a single clang. The firefly drifted over the rim, and he lowered the lid, twisting slowly so no metal cry frightened it. If the surface had been dull, the lure would never have worked. He carried the jar to the porch step once more. The lid that had flared like a mirror earlier now sat snug and matte, beads of dew muting its shine while crickets kept their steady rhythm.
Translation
