A shallow plastic bead cup, six waxy threads, and a phone propped against the backrest occupied the park bench armrest. Quinn saw every second thread throw a cooler shine, creating a silver-blue, silver-blue rhythm echoing the chevron diagram. During fleeting moments when clouds covered the sun, the shine dulled and colours blended like a tiny stone lattice. Quinn tightened another forward knot; however, the third strand folded behind the second, bending the growing band sideways. The twist grew with each pull, so Quinn paused, slipped a fingernail beneath the row, and eased three knots backward. The rescued threads now lay straight, but their fibres looked slightly rough where they had been teased. Quinn had practised the sequence at home, yet sunlight now showed flaws that indoor lamps had hidden. A few steps away, Harris reclined on a foldable blanket, reading while a clipped white gardenia lay neatly near his elbow.
A light breeze crossed the shade line, flipping loose ends and knotting them together before Quinn pinned them down. The tape loosened and the fan of colours slid right, bending the careful chevron rows. Instead of starting over, Quinn carefully slid the bead cup onto the threads, using its weight to press them flat. The glass beads chimed softly inside, an aggregate of soft blue and steel-grey spheres rolling against one another. Row by row, the band straightened, and a tiny reflective V-shape repeated until it resembled a miniature tiled walkway. Flipping the bracelet to check length, Quinn saw interlocking knots like a silver lattice, not the plain stripes imagined. That hidden togetherness of threads made the pattern feel new, so Quinn measured against a wrist and tied the final knot. The last bead slipped into place; Quinn pressed it tight, and the now-empty cup rolled quietly against the metal armrest.
