English Original
Wet boot marks darkened the boardwalk planks, and a tall kid already leaned over the marker on the far bank.
Sara and Ruby crossed with hollow knocks underfoot while running water covered their steps with steady chatter. A metal spigot fixed to the handrail leaked in a slow pattern that ticked against the wooden post. Beyond the plank bridge, ferns swished at knee height, and the forest soaked up everything except a woodpecker’s rapid knocks. At the fern hollow, three narrow paths split, and the marker’s thin plate hid behind fronds until they stood close. Ruby brushed stems aside and said, "That post looks tilted," while Sara lifted her compass for a clean bearing. She aimed for precision by turning her shoulders until the needle lined with the housing, then pointed toward the path ahead.
The plate shifted on its bolt and gave a faint clink, so the arrow changed angle as the ferns moved. Sara tried stepping left and right for a clearer view, but shade from the fronds kept sliding across the symbol. She checked the compass again, and a tiny bubble skated inside the clear case with a soft tap against the plastic. On the slight slope, the needle dragged off line by a degree, so the aim slipped just past the middle path. Sara set the compass flat on a stump to quiet the bubble, then reached for a fallen branch near the post. The stick was flexible and springy, so she could hoist the plate a touch and hold it level for a moment. Perfection stayed out of reach as the branch quivered, yet the arrow faced cleanly long enough to match the steady bearing.
Ruby held back the nearest fronds, their leaflets rubbing together, and Sara traced the line with one slow finger. The combined checks settled the choice, and they stepped onto the left fork where loose gravel answered with a dry crunch. Pines closed in and softened their boots to a hush, resin touched their fingertips, and bird calls shifted to a robin. Behind them, water still ticked under the boardwalk, and the woodpecker’s fast knocks rolled farther into the birches. At the same hour on the ridge clearing, another pair reached a swinging plate and steadied it while the wind bumped through. The loose sheet tapped its bolt in short bursts, and their shoes scuffed, then paused, as the gusts kept drumming.
