Wax smoke had drifted upward as Marco leaned forward to blow out the candles on a sample cake. Fluorescent glare washed the aisle, leaving his shadow stretched long beside the metal shelving there. He pushed forward, but the front wheel locked against a jagged edge where two floor tiles met. Marco rocked the basket gently until the rubber loosened and the cart continued its slow traverse past stacked fruit. Ceiling tubes flickered once, casting a brief haloed glow that made clear drops sparkle on plastic grape bags. Cold air leaked from an open freezer door, coating nearby packages with a thin shimmer of frost.
A sudden ringtone bounced under the ceiling panels, and Marco slipped toward the quieter bakery corner to answer. The chat lasted two minutes, the slicing machine's flicker-lit hum drowning half the words completely. When he wheeled back, mist from the produce nozzles had begun to dissipate, leaving beads along every plastic lid. Those droplets slid downward, collected at the jagged edge of a tilted herb tray, and dropped onto the floor tiles. An elderly shopper stepped on the wet patch, her heel skidding; the startled motion nudged a basket balanced near her knees. The basket bumped a resting service dog, which jerked upright, its leash yanking a shelf of bread rolls outward.
Bread bags slid but the metal shelf bent just enough, trapping them before they could scatter across the bright floor. Marco parked his cart sideways, forming a quiet barrier that halted the dog and gave the shopper room to regain balance. Shadows pooled beneath the overturned herb tray, yet the glare above marked a clear line where droplets continued to drip. He pressed the tray flat, letting remaining water run harmlessly along the floor’s shallow groove until the stream thinned. At the self-checkout near the doors, another shopper waved the rescued roll beneath a flickering scanner as the belt crept on.
Translation
