“Mind the rolling can,” Wade whispered.
A lone tin rattled along the metal shelf, its skittering rhythm mixing with the steady ping of register scanners and the low hiss from freezer vents. Beyond the glass doors, a late-summer cloudburst hammered the skylights; water drummed so hard that each strike nearly buried the squeal from a crooked cart wheel. Clara paused near the produce bins, ears tracking the clatter as the can tapped other tins, then fell quiet. The aisle never grew silent—bags rustled, a child’s shoes squealed, tubes buzzed overhead. Inside that weave, a brittle glass clink sounded once, then lingered like stored anticipation. The earlier downpour had already left puddles near the entrance.
Clara turned toward the noise and spotted a tall jar of honey pivoting on the top shelf. Each sway produced a delicate ding against the bracket below. She pushed the cart forward, yet the jammed front wheel resisted, groaning across the polished floor. A passing trolley’s jolt made the jar edge nearer the brink. Glass scraped; Wade’s elbow brushed a pasta box, and the sudden contact made him stumble, sending another metallic thrum through the aisle. The jar began to plummet, but its thick lid caught a wire lip and held. Wade let out a breath, the note drowned beneath the roof’s ceaseless watery drum.
He stepped back, judged the gap, and slid a folded cardboard display beneath the shelf. The improvised step added only a handbreadth, yet it raised him enough to still the trembling glass. Clara rocked the cart sideways, then steered it toward frozen goods where fans roared colder; the stubborn wheel loosened after two firm spins. She brought the cart beside Wade, and together they placed the honey onto a safer middle tier. Minutes later, at self-checkout, the scanner refused the faded barcode, so they walked the jar all the way back. The vessel that had been tilting earlier now waited quietly, and Clara lifted the jar from the shelf.
Translation
