Thin frost had already crept along the handle of freezer fourteen when Soren pulled the door wide and lifted a blue-grey gel pack from the top shelf. A store cat, pale as steel dust, trailed him through the cold aisle; its whiskers twitched at the ribbon of chill air streaming out. Hoping to guard the berries lying in his basket, he slipped the gel pack beside them. The cart’s front wheel nudged a floor seam and shuddered, yet Soren kept the door open for a second pack. Vapour curled around his sleeves, the quintessence of mid-winter leaking into fluorescent light, and the glass nearby turned translucent with fog.

Beside the seafood display, Dinah compared price tags while Soren added a third gel pack. The stacked cold blocks pressed against a bottle of sparkling water until the plastic turned clouded and beads began to glisten on the barcode. A designer-turned-urbanist had once praised this supermarket roof for rising like a public pavilion, but its lofty shape could not lift the humid air that now drifted downward. Condensation trickled across the scanner housing at self-checkout, and, when Soren swiped his bottle, the red beam failed to read the wet lines. The machine paused; its screen showed a frozen image instead of a total. Behind the cart, the silver-striped cat arched, ears flicking at the faint hum locked inside the stalled lane.

Soren set both elbows on the basket rim, thought of the small delay, then tugged the middle gel pack free and placed it back in the freezer. Warm aisle air flowed over the bottle; moisture unraveled into thin streaks and slid away. The next scan passed silently, and the queue behind him rolled forward again. Soren pushed the cart toward the exit, wheel now turning more easily. Far back at the freezer row, the glass door eased shut, and a last thread of fog coiled upward toward the ceiling vents.

在海鮮區旁，戴娜正比較價籤，索倫又放入第三塊膠包。堆疊的冰塊緊壓著氣泡水瓶，塑膠迅速起霧，條碼上泛出閃亮水珠。曾有城市規劃師讚美這家超市的屋頂像公共涼亭，但高挑結構無法抬走此刻下沉的濕熱空氣。當索倫在自助結帳刷瓶子時，凝結的水漬讓紅光無法讀取。機器停住，螢幕成了靜止畫面。購物車後，那隻銀紋貓豎起背脊，耳朵對準卡在通道裡的微弱嗡鳴。

索倫把手肘擱在籃邊，思索片刻後，把中間那塊保冷膠包抽出，放回冷凍櫃。溫暖的通道空氣掠過瓶身，濕氣化成細線滑落。下一次掃描順利無聲地完成，後方隊伍再次向前滑動。索倫推著車朝出口走去，車輪轉動輕快許多。在遙遠的冷凍櫃排，玻璃門慢慢闔上，最後一縷霧氣向上盤旋，消散在天花板排風口。
