English Original
Someone had rearranged the produce tables overnight, and Keira paused beside a misted row of apples. The skins felt cool and waxy under her fingers, and a faint spray still clung to their surfaces, leaving her sleeve damp. She hoped to weigh them quickly, print a label, and reach the self-checkout before the midday line formed. The scale’s glass screen, still slick from the spray, offered a shifting spectrum of icons. Her first tap slid; the machine selected peaches instead of apples, and the damp layer embarrassed the sensors, delaying her. She wiped the smooth surface with the inside of her jacket, but moisture crept back from her own hand. Behind her, a pyramid of canned soup rose like a small monument, its metal sides catching the fluorescent light while she tried again. The screen had been usable moments earlier for another shopper, yet her label refused to appear.
A squeal of rubber distracted her; her cart’s front wheel had jammed against a narrow metal seam where the floor tiles met. The sudden stop shoved the apples forward, their smooth sides knocking together with a muted thud. This block was purely physical, different from the fussy screen. Keira bent, shifted her weight, and rocked the handle upward; the locked wheel loosened only when she angled the cart almost onto its back wheels. A wave of colder air flowed from the freezer section nearby, offering brief sanctuary from the sticky warmth of the produce spray. As she rolled back, a wall mural of local firefighters—painted to celebrate valor—reflected on the wet tiles. She returned to the scale, curled her knuckle instead of her fingertip, and pressed slowly. The sensor recognized the firmer contact; a single label fed out. She peeled it free, and the cardboard core spun once, bare and pale, after the last sticker peeled away.
Translation
