“Blue line rising,” Zara whispered. She tapped the magnifying glass against the notebook, and the dull bump echoed under the low ceiling of the bungalow. Three glasses stood like tall bells, each ringing faintly whenever a celery stalk shifted inside. A distant tap from the sink marked time, and Zara tried to evaluate the height of colour: red at twelve millimetres, blue near ten, yellow barely eight. She had placed the tinted water before breakfast, and each stalk had been cut on a sharp diagonal by Kane earlier that morning. A cool draft trickled along the table, chilling the blue glass; the brief chill drew a soft creak from the stalk. Zara slid a folded towel under that glass to level it, noting a pale trace of dye already climbing one leaf. If the draft stayed strong, the climb would slow, yet the experiment still hummed on.
Then a clear ding rang from the front hall; a parcel waited by the door. Zara stepped away, footsteps thudding along the wooden floor, and the kitchen noises sank behind her. During her brief absence, minutes stretched like a private drought for the neglected glasses. Warm sun crossing the windowpane thinned the blue dye; the chilled red glass steadied, and a coloured bead formed on its rim. When Zara returned, the scent of cardboard still on her hands, she saw the sunlit blue now faint; she reached toward the shelf for fresh dye. Her elbow brushed the ruler. The metal strip rattled forward, struck a pencil, the pencil rolled, nudged the magnifying glass, and the lens slid into the first glass. The impact made the row shiver; red water sloshed, then tapped the middle glass, which nudged the last in a slow domino.
Sticky towel edges soaked the spill, yet the final glass still rocked toward the table edge. Zara analyzed the motion, then thrust the folded notebook between glass and edge. Paper edges rasped, absorbed a thin stripe of red, and the wobble eased. The celery leaves quivered overhead like tiny flags after wind, and droplets dripped in uneven beats onto the towel. She could not undo the diluted blue, yet the uneven tones now revealed blocked channels she had hoped to study. She bent low, ears close to the glasses, listening for the soft inner fizz of rising bubbles while her left hand kept pressing the notebook against the sliding glass.
Translation
