Cool glass curved under Keane’s fingertips, and a hiss skirted the rim as he steadied the bottle on the cloth pad. A grey base had been poured earlier and was already compressed. Brown coarse grains waited in the nearest dish; the pile lay like a tiny gravel bed where coarsest pieces clinked together when his scoop touched them. He hoped to spread a thin, even base, so he placed the funnel in the neck and let the grains tumble. The stream rattled down, struck the glass with a drumbeat, and built a steep mound. Blake, counting from beside him, reached “three” before the mound avalanched, sending a muffled thud through the bottle and tilting every stripe above. Keane turned the bottle a quarter circle and tried tapping the glass, yet each tap only produced a disheartened clatter and left the slope rougher.
Fine rose sand, soft as garden silt, whispered in the next dish. It shimmered like pressed wildflower petals, but the portion was small. Keane set the funnel again; a stray meow rose behind him as the workshop cat hopped onto the table. Its tail brushed the funnel, nudging it sideways so the hissed rose stream fell off-centre. The bottle answered with uneven patter, and a crooked pink ridge grew along one wall. If he had kept pouring in the centre, the new flow would have drowned the earlier feather pattern completely. Dina, holding the cloth pad, caught his glance and eased the bottle into a slow spin; the rattling changed pitch, weaving the pink stripe into a rising spiral instead of a blotch. Keane’s shoulders eased as the cat blinked at the turning colours.
They moved on to the last grey batch, grains so fine they sounded like distant rain when they slipped through the funnel. Compression pressed the early layers thinner, and a faint halo formed where loose dust filtered outward, colouring the front face the shade of a riverbank. The bottle kept turning; each pulse of colour slid into the growing helix, and Blake’s counting marked the height. When the final grains clicked against the metal funnel, Dina lifted a stick and dipped it through the neck. A soft scrape traced downward, then she pulled the stick free in a slow breath, letting pink and grey feathers trail behind the tip. Fine scratches from the stick caught the afternoon light along the glass neck.
Translation
