Beyond the circle, three earlier planes lay in a precise diagonal, each exactly an arm-length apart like stepping-stones across the grass. Miles pressed his thumb along a fresh crease; tension in his wrist steadied the line and the cool sheet warmed quickly under his palm. The edge flashed luminous where sunlight caught it. Flora, who had been timing flights, tightened a striped scarf that kept slipping off her shoulder whenever the breeze changed. Tape scars still clung to the bench where parents had once vended lemonade during the spring bazaar, and the roughened strips scratched softly against Miles’s forearm as he measured a wing with the ruler. The ribbon on the wind stick flicked downhill. He bent his knees, let gravity load his arm, and released; the plane climbed, then sagged, sliding to a stop three paces short of the chalk.

He jogged down the slope, calves tightening on the incline, and retrieved the flattened craft. At the adjustment stone he clipped a small paper clip to the nose, re-creased both wings, and flung it with extra gusto. The extra mass pulled forward too soon; turf brushed the nose and the craft halted just outside the ring. Picking it up, Miles noticed the four planes now formed the same diagonal line—the wind, not chance, had arranged the pattern he had spotted earlier. He slipped off the heavy clip, pinched each wingtip upward a millimetre, and chose a lighter clip instead. The chalk circle, which had been traced by Flora an hour earlier, waited below. Miles watched the ribbon slacken, shifted his weight, and launched again. Shoulder and elbow opened together; the plane glided, curved slightly, and crossed the circle before sinking into the grass at its very centre. He climbed back to the bench, and the stack that had been tall and tidy was now thin and uneven; he slid a fresh sheet free.
