Five brief flights had curled away from the chalk circle before Kit placed his latest silver-white fold on the flat stone. The wings looked even, yet the left one carried a hairline ripple. The circle itself had been chalked in a broad blue-grey ring during the first break. From the launch hilltop he breathed against the cool morning air and threw. The craft lifted into the pale air, caught a lazy gust, and curved off course. It landed three paces beyond the circle, diving into blue-grey grass streaked with dew. He hurried down, noticed plenty of fresh creases near the nose, and sighed. Mr. Hart, who had been chalking the circle with steady strokes, glanced up but said nothing.

Kit left the slope and crossed to the folding bench, where a silver bowl waited for Clover, the neighbor’s sheepdog. Thin mist hovered above the grass, turning every blade a muted steel tone. Kit tipped a bag until kibble rattled into the bowl; the sound drew Clover from behind the storage shed. A single bark echoed against the school’s blue-grey wall, then the dog lowered its head to eat. While Clover crunched, Kit straightened the ribbon on the wind stick so its frayed end pointed north. Next, he lifted a chunk of chalk and widened the circle, the powder leaving pale arcs on his fingertips. On the way back he hopped toward the slope, slipped on slick grass, and caught balance after a short stumble.

As Kit regained the hilltop, a breeze rolled the earlier craft from its hiding place and slid it against his boot. He picked it up without thinking, pressing the ripple flat with one thumb. The wind ribbon now lay still, so he angled the nose slightly upward and curled his wrist less than before. If the breeze changed again, the wings would simply ride it instead of fighting. He stepped to the edge, cool air sliding past his cheeks, and released. The silver shape glided in a clean line toward the widened chalk circle. Kit kept his gaze locked on its steady path, one foot still lifting from the damp grass.

基特離開坡頂，走向折紙長凳。鄰居家的牧羊犬克洛弗的銀色食盆已經放好。薄薄的霧懸在草上，讓每片草葉顯得像鋼灰色。基特拿出袋子，倒出顆粒犬糧，清脆的碰撞聲把克洛弗從倉庫後方吸引過來。一聲短促的狗吠在校舍的青灰牆面回響，牠低頭開始咀嚼。趁克洛弗進食，基特整理風向帶，讓磨損的尾端對準北方。接著，他拿起一塊粉筆，把目標圈畫得更寬，白粉在指尖留下淡痕。回程時他想跳過一條小溝，卻因濕滑的草面失足，踉蹌著重新站穩。

基特再度回到坡頂時，一陣風把那架早先失敗的紙機吹出藏身處，輕輕推到他靴邊。他隨手撿起，用大拇指壓平那條皺痕。風向帶此刻靜止，他把機頭輕微上抬，手腕的角度比先前更柔和。如果風再變，機翼便能順勢滑行，不再硬碰。基特踏到坡緣，涼涼的空氣掠過臉頰，然後鬆手放飛。銀色紙機沿著乾淨的直線朝加寬的粉筆圈滑行。基特的目光緊隨飛行路徑，一隻腳仍從濕草上抬起。
