The bucket looked almost empty, but the large hoop frame still needed a full dip. York crouched beside the low table while an adult read quietly on the porch, close enough to glance over. Earlier films had popped after seconds, and much of the solution had been used during those short experiments. A stone walkway ran from the garden tap to the table, its cool slabs pristine beneath York's bare feet. He grabbed a small plastic tote, turned the tap, and filled it until water climbed two finger-breadths below the rim. Walking back, each step jolted the surface, and thin waves sloshed over the edge onto the grass. When he poured the load into the bucket, the level lifted barely a thumb-width, still far below the hoop’s lower bar.
Bram knelt beside the table, soap solution glinting silver-blue; a faint irritation tingled where droplets dried on his wrist. The mixture had been whisked all morning, so fresh water alone would weaken it unless they tipped the bucket gradually. Together they lifted the tote for a second run, keeping elbows tight to steady the weight during the return along the walkway. If the water sloshed out again during the walk, they would lose more solution than they gained. After the pour, the surface crept upward, brushing the hoop at one corner yet leaving a bright air pocket. A third trip demanded a new tactic, so York bent his knees, slowed his pace, and held the tote against his chest. The moment the last stream splashed in, the surface jumped, met the hoop, and settled into a quiet mirror without gaps.
York lifted the dripping hoop clear, and both friends drifted toward the wind-shadow wall where the air lay completely still. Holding the frame at eye level, they paused to scrutinize the slow rivers of colour sliding downward across the translucent sheet. Greens melted into violets, and faint rainbow bands spilled onto the table top like paint from an unseen brush. Without warning, a bright blue dragonfly darted from the ivy and tapped the film, bursting it in a whisper of spray. Droplets spotted Bram’s glasses, and miniature circles rippled across the pristine mirror that seconds earlier had floated weightless inside the hoop. Laughing, Bram wiped the lenses while York was already dipping the hoop for another try.
