A brass timer, a bent wire star, and a low plastic bucket gleamed on the garden table beside the fence. Tobias had lined up five other frames—circle, square, triangle, tiny heart, and a dinner-plate hoop—each one chiming softly whenever the table vibrated. The bucket’s surface hissed as a drip slid back into the solution, and a bee buzzed above nearby fennel stalks that brushed one another with a papery whisper. An adult’s footsteps sounded on the porch behind him, then faded; the wide yard lay free of voices except for distant traffic that pulsed like a slow drum.

He dipped the hoop first. Soap sloshed, metal clinked, and a broad film rose, a fragile bridge of colour that hummed under the light breeze. To reach the wind-shadow wall he needed to navigate ten quiet steps across open grass. He tried to synchronize each footfall with the timer’s steady tick so the frame stayed level, yet a stray gust rippled the film; it popped with a sharp pat and droplets pattered onto his sandal. The bucket answered with another hiss, its level now lower, and the timer’s ticking sounded louder against the hush. Two more attempts followed: a triangle wobbled, then failed; the star snagged on a rough solder and burst before leaving the dipping station. Soap tapped the table edge, forming a growing puddle that made his toes fumble for grip.

Only the square frame remained truly clean. Tobias had planned to study every shape, but the shrinking solution and quicker pops pressed him to narrow the goal. He chose the square, dipped it once, and lifted very slowly. A thin sheet formed, rainbow bands sliding downward while gravity whispered through the film. He held it close to the fence where the fennel dulled the wind, ignoring the weaker colours there. For three long ticks the surface stayed whole, then a small bubble inside collapsed and the frame rang, sending a final drip into the grass. A faint fizz rose from the bucket as another tiny bubble burst against its rim.
