Lyra pushed the tall glass door, and a ribbon of cool street air folded into the warmer shop, stirring cedar and faint sandalwood like steam above soup. Dawn lingered near the entrance shelf, comparing ribbon colours; her movement shook a tiny ceramic bluebird that perched on a display box, releasing an extra puff of pine-sweet powder. Lyra’s goal was simple: find a bundle that matched her cousin’s love of citrus. She approached the mid-aisle display, but Hector, a slow-moving tourist, kept lifting boxes, sniffing, and sliding them back without order. The mingled jasmine, rose, and peppery vetiver formed a small deluge of fragrance around his elbows, clouding every other note. Lyra edged sideways, arms stretched, and managed to pull two slim, tangerine-labelled bundles. She inhaled one, then the other, yet both sticks tasted of nothing but smoky wood after four quick samples; her nose had gone dull. She stepped back toward the doorway breeze, counting slow breaths until a faint citrus sting returned on her tongue. The shop clock ticked; only forty minutes of opening time remained.
She walked deeper to the resin corner, where heavier air hung over a stone mortar that gave off sugary amber. A fallen tag lay beside two nearly identical bundles resting against the cool grey surface. They carried the same colour and grain; only scent could tell them apart. The sample-burning tray still glowed, so smoke from the previous test coiled upward, masking fresh clues. A draft from the opening door rushed in again, spinning the smoke and scattering loose ash across the mortar like gritty perseverance clinging to rock. Lyra adapted: she crouched, held both bundles at chest height, and tapped their ends over the stone. Flecks drifted down; one trail smelled sharply of lemon peel, the other of dusty hay. That contrasting insight arrived through her nostrils alone, revealed by the calmer pocket of air close to the floor, where the mystique of resin no longer drowned lighter notes. She chose the lemon bundle and eased it into her basket. A faint ring of pale yellow dust now circled the stone counter, catching the lantern light in silence.
Translation
