The rainbow edge on the coaster had vanished. Was the glass jar sitting at a different angle now?
Lyra set her school bag down and bent closer, her breath warming the cool glass until fresh fog blossomed across it. Afternoon light spilled amber through the window, touching the gravel, charcoal, and soil layers with soft gold. A page turned behind her as Cedric’s voice counted fern fronds in a workbook, yet the counting paused when the inner wall stayed cloudy. Lyra lifted the lid a finger’s width, and beads rolled down like tiny marbles, dropping onto a moss patch that slid toward the charcoal. Thoughtfulness slowed her hands; if the soil overtopped that dark band, drainage would fail and roots might drown. She eased a tweezer under the drifting patch, nudged it back, and watched the layers rest again in muted harmony.
A darker streak still cut across the gravel, so she tilted the jar over the cork coaster to trace its path. Light bent through the curved wall, scattering caramel flashes that gave the ordinary moisture an odd enchantment. The streak ended beneath an untouched earlier patch whose star-shaped leaves hugged the earth firmly. Through the magnifying glass those leaves looked anchored by hairlike threads; newer pieces lacked that grip and skated whenever the jar moved. If she misted only the loose sections, their roots could settle without washing more soil downward. The misting bottle hissed, sending a gentle patter across emerald surfaces while leaving the anchored patch dry. She set a smooth pebble beside the smallest frond in an empathetic curve, its weight bracing the nearby moss against future slides, and charcoal crumbs stopped drifting.
Condensation thinned, revealing the gravel once more, yet one dry corner near the desk edge cracked slightly. Lyra aimed the nozzle; a single squeeze remained. The last silver drop arced through warm air, landed on the corner, and the trigger clicked against an empty chamber.
