Cal, cleaning a child's sneaker, lifted a brass seahorse charm that had dropped from the frayed lace eyelet. Neither of them spoke; the awl taps and the hum of the buffing wheel filled warm air between breaths.

A boot waited on the counter, its heel shifting whenever Tess pressed on the sole with her palm. A missing nail had already been replaced last night, yet the stubborn wobble still spoiled the balance. Cal fetched a strip of cork from the sole-material drawer and pressed it under the heel as a first patch. When Tess set the boot down, the heel stood straighter, yet the toe lifted slightly like a seesaw. That extra lift pushed the boot’s silhouette above its partner, and the pair rocked together like mismatched rowboat oars. Tess wiped her brow and used a stubby wrench on the metal bracket holding the heel plates. The bracket squeaked, and the wobble grew worse, as if every fix taught the boot a trick.

Cal glanced at the swirling pattern of tags again, his eyes narrowing at the empty fourth spaces. He slid one tag sideways, revealing a darker outline on the wood where a heel pad once dried. The spiral actually mapped test shims, and the gaps clearly marked pieces that proved unnecessary. Tess laughed, pulled the boot close, and peeled away the middle rubber layer with one decisive twist. Without the extra slice, the cork pressed against the heel block, and the boot settled flat against the counter. Cal placed the seahorse charm on the laces and rolled the pair across the counter. If the wobble returned again, he would carefully test another spacer from the spiral map. He and Tess exchanged nods while dust hung between them, turning golden in the sunlight.
