Rubber rollers thumped against wooden trays as Olive stepped into the craft corner, fingers flexing after the long queue. Every table except one held pairs of elbows, and a boy already angled toward the last space. She lengthened her stride; the bark-chip grit under her shoes shifted. She kept balance and slid her palm onto the unused frame before he reached it. The volunteer nodded, and the boy drifted toward the sink. Olive had prepared for this slot. She had collected a broad sunflower leaf outside, its veins still damp. Droplets intermingle with light seafoam-colored ink left from a previous demonstration. The pastel solution had been prepared for younger visitors and still sat in a shallow dish. She lowered the leaf, let it nestle against the rubber pad, and guided a wooden roller across the rough texture. The first pass left a pale print because the limestone dust on the newspaper absorbed some pigment. She rolled again, pressing with steadier weight through her shoulders.
She lifted the print to inspect it. A gust slipped through the open side window and puffed the sunflower scent into the corridor. A striped bee zig-zagged inside, landed on the wet ink, and twitched. The sudden movement caught the eye of a house sparrow perched on the rafters. The bird dropped in a quick glide, wings beating near Olive’s ear. She ducked, and her elbow nudged the drying rack. Half-finished prints swayed like laundry. The sparrow’s wingtip brushed the top sheet, sending it fluttering toward the water bowl prepared for rinsing rollers. Before the page could sink, the volunteer stepped forward and blocked the glide with a clipboard. The sheet slid against the plastic surface and stalled. Olive shifted her stance, brought the rack back to stillness, and added her own print to an upper bar. Her fingers loosened then, and she placed the wooden roller onto the metal tray. A thin line of seafoam ink streamed from its edge toward the drain hole.
Translation
