English Original
A pair of small hands pressed the citrus juicer; Hugo was already rotating a half-lemon as Eve stepped behind the folding table. A blue-striped dragonfly hovered above the pitcher, its wings quivering each time silver droplets slid down the glass. The tactile ridges of the juicer squeaked while thick pulp slipped toward the spoon’s stained handle. Pale sugar crystals had already begun to solidify at the cloudy bottom, leaving the top liquid flat and sour. Eve circled a wooden spoon through the drink, trying to pull the sweetness upward again. Ice cubes chimed against glass and their echo faded as meltwater spread through the pale swirl. The two friends, united by habit, exchanged a quick nod across the warm tabletop today. Her partner tilted the price sign upright just before a light breeze rolled the nearest stack of paper cups.
A sharp hiss from the neighbor’s sprinkler sliced through their rhythm, throwing a silver sheet of drops across the sidewalk. Eve lunged after the loosened cups, her shoes squelching against the wet pavement this morning. Hugo shoved the coin box under the chair and dragged the serving table deeper into the umbrella’s shade. During the scramble the dragonfly vanished, and for a breath the stand stood empty except for dripping wood and scattered coins. When the sprinkler paused, the partners walked back, brushing cold beads from their arms. They had been absent barely a minute, yet time had worked without mercy on the pitcher.
During their brief absence, a translucent band of syrup had coated the rim of the pitcher. Sugar had again slipped downward, and the top liquid tasted sharper than before when Eve lifted a sample with a spoon. Syrupy threads clung to the grain, showing that the dragonfly had chased sweetness rather than surface sparkle. She raised her voice to Hugo across the table, pointing at the uneven colours inside. They agreed to leave the drink layered and let taste respond differently for each customer. At the far end of the table, coins were being counted into neat piles by Hugo’s quick fingers. From the porch, Dante’s father flipped a newspaper page, and a second dragonfly circled the garden tap where the spare jug waited. Eve tilted the cool pitcher a little, and the striped visitor brushed its legs across the syruped edge.
Translation
