"Hold the pitcher steady," Dean called. Griffon shifted the glass container along the honey-hot tabletop, its yellow contents swirling into a cloudy spiral. A soft thud followed when the pitcher base met a knot in the wood, and the vibration nudged two empty paper cups into a brief lateral slide toward the table edge. Griffon’s goal was simple: top up the cooling bowl before the afternoon crowd appeared. He reached behind the folding chair for the insulated cooler, but the lid clung to its rim as if glued by melted frost. Tugging harder only made sugar granules jump inside the nearby bowl, and each effort stole a quantum of his time while the ice in the serving bowl continued to shrink. A breeze lifted the price sign; the damp cardboard began to crumple where earlier drips had soaked through.
Dean glimpsed a passer-by pause, eyebrow raised in a skeptical tilt at the half-blurred numbers. Griffon let the cooler alone and caught the drifting sign before it folded over completely. If he had kept wrestling with the cooler lid, the stand would have stood empty while confusion grew. He peeled the soggy corner away, noticing how the smear already looked like a bright lemon outline. Instead of rewriting the lost digit, he wiped the rest into loose curves, then dipped the wooden spoon into the pitcher and brushed thin stripes of pale juice across the cardboard; sunlight dried them fast, leaving glossy golden shapes. Dean shifted the umbrella a notch forward, its canvas groaning as the clamp locked, and the new artwork glowed under the fresh shade. Coins chimed inside the box as the waiting passer-by dropped payment without another word. A pale streak of watered sugar ran across the corner of the new sign, drying into a faint, sticky ribbon.
Translation
