Emil, a patient hobbyist with every small project, slid the only trowel they had between lid and rim as a quick brace. The handle wobbled like loose teeth, yet the improvised prop held for a breath. Nadia scooped the first load, grains of dark, damp soil rolling in a soft stream.

As soon as the second shovel pressed upward, the thin brace began to twist. Emil hunted nearby piles and lifted a smooth stick of driftwood, washed pale and flat at one end. He jammed it beside the trowel, adding height; the lid now angled sharply, harsh grit sliding from its underside onto his sleeve. To feel safer, Nadia, never a trained builder but eager with her hands, shoved a short plank from broken marker boards under the first two supports. The stack rose higher, and the lid’s weight shifted forward until the hinges groaned. Damp crumbs drizzled faster, splashing against the wheelbarrow lip and peppering their shoes. The additions, once helpful, now squeezed the opening so tight that Nadia’s shovel clanged against the edge instead of dipping cleanly.

Emil drew a slow breath, waited until the gravel quieted, then tugged the middle driftwood piece free with one quick pull. The extra height vanished; the remaining trowel and plank lowered the lid to a gentle slant, wide enough for the shovel yet stable against the hinge strain. Soil slipped smoothly again, packing the barrow with cool, grainy weight. Nadia traced the solid hinge joints, their precise artisanship showing where some long-ago carpenter had mounted them. She nudged the wheelbarrow handle; its wobbling wheel stayed in line this time.
