English Original
“Who pressed these deep lines across the soil?” Ned crouched at the edge of his family’s plot, palm sweeping loose crumbs aside. The raised bed showed a pattern like a washboard, and the lettuce seedlings sat thirsty in the midday warmth. He signed out a garden fork from the shed, the handle rubbing splinters against his gloves. Each plunge followed a steady rhythm: push with a foot, lean back, lift, and shake. He had already loosened half the bed when a shadow crossed the boards—Yvette, weeding in the neighbouring plot, straightened with a wave. Ned drove the fork deeper near the centre, hoping air would reach the roots before the watering window ended.
The tool bit harder than before, and a clump rose heavier than his wrist could balance. Soil rolled off the prongs and spilled into the neat onion row Yvette had planted during yesterday’s recess from school. The front stems folded under the weight. Ned’s shoulders stiffened; he eased the fork down and knelt to scoop earth away, yet each handful only uncovered dry pockets below. Yvette stepped over the timber edge, knees bending to keep balance on the damp boards. Without exchanging words, she slid a flat wooden board between the onion sprouts and Ned’s work, creating a small wall. Ned shovelled the fallen soil back toward the fork holes, pressing it into the shallow recess between the two rows. If they worked together quickly, the watering slot might still be enough.
Soon the bed lay aerated, and the onion line stood again, though a slight curve now traced its middle. Ned paused to marvel at how the board caught tiny vibrations, a whisper of movement that lowered clods gently. He wound the hose over, water hissed out in a broad fan, and the moisture sank without puddling. They returned the board to the shed, legs tingling from crouching. Bees drifted above the herb patch, and gravel shifted under their shoes. A single onion blade leaned beside the fresh recess, unseen while the friends compared soil flecks on their palms.
Translation
