Metal links rasped above Cora’s head, each scrape rising, pausing, then landing again like a small cymbal. The thud of Bram’s shoes on the rubber mat added a slower beat while he sailed forward on the only swing. Cora had visited this playground many afternoons and had gathered invaluable lessons about patience; the first was to claim a spot near the fence where the rhythm of chains helped her count turns. A caretaker swished a damp mop along the edge of the nearby water fountain, the cloth ends slapping softly, clearing a puddle that earlier children had left. An acorn bounced off the metal slide with a quick ping and rolled toward the swing set, its wooden shell knocking twice against Cora’s sneaker before stopping.
More footsteps arrived. Chains rattled, voices rose, and the queue behind her thickened until three younger children stood close enough for their breath to mix with the metallic chorus. Each new arrival meant the available swing-time grew thinner, as obvious as the shrinking shadow under the platform. The caretaker finished; however, the freshly cleaned ground stayed wet longer than expected. Shoes now squeaked across the smooth patch, so Bram needed extra pushes to regain height, and every extra push stretched the wait. Cora tightened her grip on the fence yet leaned sideways to assist a smaller girl in finding a safe spot on the soft surface, hoping that small kindness would connect them into an informal order. When Bram finally slowed, Cora noticed the distant whistle of bicycle spokes beyond the low gate—a reminder that afternoon light was sliding away.
Her plan had been ten long swings, but the growing line and the lingering damp forced a choice. She climbed onto the warm seat, pumped her legs just four times, then dragged her toes to give the next child a chance. Rubber granules hissed under her soles as she stepped aside. Behind her, the chains kept singing their dry, steady rhythm into the lengthening shade.
