Cora spotted the heaviest clip, but it had slid toward the shade, wedged tight against the rim. She tried to scoop it toward her palm; the metal glinted then disappeared behind a deeper shadow. The clip had been lodged by an earlier bump, and the smooth plastic edge offered almost no grip. A twin clip, lighter, rocked beside her thumb, reflecting the sun like a tiny mirror, yet she left it untouched. The screwdriver had been placed nearby, its tip reflecting a narrow shaft of light across the bench.

Cora slid the screwdriver into the dim gap; the flank caught overhead glare and traced a ribbon of light along the tray. She levered upward with slow pressure, expecting the clip to pop free, yet it merely rocked and fell back into deeper shade. Resistance matched the first try, so she shifted her wrist, lowered the angle, and pressed again; glow now grazed the clip’s edge. This change warped the lodged metal; a soft scrape followed, and the heaviest piece rolled into the bright half of the bench. A dried hibiscus petal clung beneath it; the fragment had reduced weight, turning the piece into a hollow twin. A hum of elation rose from the arena as Trent’s disc kept spinning, reflected beams circling like tiny spotlights across its rim. Cora brushed the petal away, snapped the clip onto her top, then crossed the boundary between shade and glow toward the launcher. If the sunlight moved once more, her freshly balanced disc would meet a cooler surface and risk another drift. With that thought, she held the braided cord halfway through its final wind, arm poised beside the pooling shadow.
