Bright Dot on Wet Clay-

English Original
Wet earth mixed with a faint metallic tang drifted up as Delia leaned over the humming wheel. On the drying rack, three bowls stood side by side, each rim notched at equal gaps, drawing her eyes with their tidy rhythm. She slapped a cool grey lump onto the textured disc and pressed it firm against the metal. Her heel lowered the foot pedal until the wheel whirred with a steadfast, gentle vibration. Water from the basin slicked her palms; the clay surface turned slippery almost at once. Yet, as she pulled upward to raise a tall wall, the base began to slide, wobbling like jelly at each rotation. She lifted her hands clear, letting the wheel slow while the crooked column slumped inward and folded on itself.
She peeled the soft wreck from the disc, its extra water dripping onto her shoes. A short walk brought it to the clay-prep board beside the stool. There she wedged the mass, rolling, folding, and pressing until a dull pop proved an air pocket gone. Light brushed the drying rack; the grooves on the bowls threw slim shadows across their curves. Those shadows offered a reminiscence of willow leaves hanging in quiet rows. She pinched off a smaller lump, returned to the wheel, and centered it using slower, steadier pressure. If she had forced the tall shape again, the base would still have slipped outside the track of the wheel. Instead, she lowered her hands and coaxed the clay outward, shaping a broad vessel only two fingers high.
A wooden rib, its edge worn smooth, waited in the tool jar, and she picked it up. She guided the rib at a shallow angle, carving paired grooves around the rim while the wheel turned beneath steady fingers. Midway, hot air rolled from the kiln room and stiffened the top edge, letting thin cracks appear. She soaked the sponge, brushed cool moisture over the rim, and the surface smoothed again. Round after round, a ringed pattern surfaced; each groove matched the rack bowls yet would hold glaze in deeper bands. The moving circles offered fascination through touch instead of sight, rippling under her knuckles like tiny gears. Delia tapped the pin tool into one groove, marking a bright dot that glimmered on the damp clay.
Translation
