The clay block on the wooden board looked solid, yet its surface sagged under Moritz’s fingertips like warm pudding. A faint spiral scratch ran along the top, a quiet mark left by some earlier, unknown tool. He lifted the lump; unexpected weight pulled his elbows downward, tightening joints already dusted with grey crumbs. Sliding onto the low stool, he slapped the clay on the wheel center and pressed to anchor it firmly. The wheel began to hum as his foot coaxed the pedal, and the mound tried to ascend but wobbled. Moritz tried to cradle the spinning mass between wet palms, steering the sway with gentle inward pressure. If the wheel ran too fast, the wobble would fling slurry over his knees, so he kept the speed moderate. Still, thin vibration from the scratch spread outward, and the wall began to thicken unevenly along that path.

He had already wedged the clay twice that morning, yet he now hoped to shape a narrow-necked vase before class ended. Pausing, he leaned closer to savor the earthy steam rising from the wheel, unaware of a door opening behind him. A wave of dry heat drifted from the kiln room and brushed his forearms, tightening the glossy skin of the vase. By then the outer wall had been thinned by extra water, so a narrow rim stiffened almost immediately. Hairline cracks appeared where the scratch had first shown, turning the mark from curiosity into real danger for the piece. Moritz released the pedal, cut the power, and carried the sagging clay to the clay-prep board to tinker with it again. He pounded air from the lump, folded it like dough, then rolled a rib carved from driftwood across its surface for smoothing. Returning, he recentered the clay, added only a thin film of water, and pressed slowly until a taller column began to ascend. He carefully cupped the neck with damp fingers and let the wheel coast at a gentle, almost sleepy pace. Moritz dipped his fingertips into the cloudy basin, and behind him a loosened chip of clay slid unnoticed from the drying rack.
