Amber ribbons left from yesterday's family reunion had clung to the sun-warmed fence all morning. Near them, an aunt paged through a magazine while keeping a casual eye on Zane. He dipped the dinner-plate hoop into the shallow bucket; the glycerine solution rose in a honey-coloured sheet between the smooth wire. Tiny rainbow bands rolled slowly downward, sliding across the surface like streams of molten copper. Halfway across the lawn toward the wind-shadow wall, a stray puff of air flexed his wrist. The film shivered and vanished with a whisper, leaving wet speckles on his cheeks. The cousin who had served as narrator in last night’s puppet show laughed softly. Zane blinked, lifted the glistening rim, and let the leftover drops slide back into the grass.

Warm light pooled on the wooden table while Zane busied himself elsewhere. He unscrewed the tap beside the herb patch, filling a small watering can so the bucket could be topped up later. A soft canvas pouch holding extra glycerine vials slipped from his pocket. He caught it just above the grass, feeling the slippery film on its neck. The family dog chose that moment to frolic through the splash zone. Droplets of soap-flecked water flew into the air, and the animal chased them as if they were fireflies. The breeze calmed, but he remained at the table, arranging the wire frames in tidy rows.

A sudden delighted shout from the aunt drew him back toward the fence. She had bumped the low table while searching for a spare cloth. The hoop now balanced on its rim, already coated by a thin film that sunlight caught in caramel flashes. He reached for it without thinking, as naturally as one lifts a teacup from a shelf. This time he slid a wide cardboard panel, scavenged from a cake box, between the frame and the open lawn. If another wandering gust arrived, the improvised board would gently break its path. He walked steadily across the warm grass toward the wind-shadow wall ahead. The luminous sheet of swirling colours sagged slightly along the top edge but still held. One final amber drip escaped the wire and fell into the nearly dry bucket. A faint plunk marked the very last drop of usable solution in the pail.
