Erik set his clipboard on the pharmacy ledge, and a cool droplet crossed the top sheet—where had it fallen from? He dabbed the page with his sleeve, then slid the form under the desk lamp’s warmer circle. The heat dried the smear, yet the numbers he had just written blurred like wet chalk. When the technician checked, the mistake pushed Erik back to the ticket dispenser for a fresh queue number. He tore off seventy-five, squeezing the rubber inkfish that dangled from his backpack as if trying to knead away delay. Despite the bustle, serenity hovered over the hallway, broken only by the printer’s uneven chatter. Cold air drifted from the ceiling vent, brushing his forearms and carrying the sharp hint of disinfectant toward the chairs.

While Erik waited, another bead escaped the cooler’s loose spout, travelled along the slick counter, and slipped into the ticket tray. That tiny splash nudged a neat row of vibrant tickets, and several flipped over the edge like thin dominoes. One landing ticket skidded across the linoleum, brushed Erik’s shoe, and slid beneath the pharmacist’s rolling stool. The wheels jammed; the next label sheet stalled inside the printer, its half-printed bar code hanging wet with scattered ink.

A nurse hurried over, folded a thick towel, and wedged it under the spout, guiding the leak into a plastic cup. The tray stopped shaking, yet the printer still needed clearing, so Erik’s second form joined the slow pile beside the lamp. The jam had already been cleared from the gears, yet the machine waited for a restart signal from the counter. He leaned closer, and the lamp’s warmer glow touched the cup and the towel together, lending unexpected intimacy to the improvised dam. One last droplet hit the lamp base, threw a brief rainbow, and two tiny beads rolled opposite ways along the warm rim.

護理師快步趕來，折起一塊厚紙巾，塞進水嘴下方，把滲漏導進塑膠杯。托盤不再抖動，但印表機仍需清理，因此艾瑞克的第二張表格加入了檯燈旁那堆緩慢增長的文件。堵塞已從齒輪間清除，可機器仍等待櫃臺傳來重啟訊號。他湊近些，檯燈較暖的光同時覆在杯子與紙巾上，給臨時水壩添了一抹意外的親密。一顆最後的水珠擊中燈座，拋出短暫的彩光，兩顆更小的珠子沿著溫熱的金屬框朝相反方向滾去。
