The Leaf That Pushed Him Across-

English Original
Only two dry patches clung to Vernon's wool socks; the rest darkened where meltwater crept in from the puddle. He still aimed to glide from the stone border to the far bank, a span no wider than three long strides. The usual procedure—push, lean, then coast—failed at once when his boot struck the frozen-leaf spot. That tiny bump, locked hard in the cloudy surface, snagged his sole and threw his knee forward; the slide lost speed and ended short. Vernon had tried to kick the leaf free, yet the ice had been strengthened by a tight framework of white threads, and the leaf would not budge. He rubbed his ankle where muscle and bone seemed to rebound against each other after the jolt, then tapped the softening edge to take into account its growing weakness.
Ruby stepped onto the ice with a small blue-grey terrier, its paws skittering like pebbles on glass. The centre allowed only one traveler, so a quick compromise formed: Ruby waited on the gritty pavement while Vernon attempted one last run. He noticed that the same leaf bump which blocked him also offered rare roughness in the slick field. Leaning lower, he placed his rear boot directly behind the ridge, bent his front leg, and pushed. The rough edge gripped just long enough to load his weight; the moment the boot sprang clear, the sudden force carried him straight over the thinning middle. His front foot splashed through a shallow veil near the far rim, yet momentum kept him upright until solid stone met rubber. The dog barked once, and Ruby began her turn, smiling without a word.
Vernon wrung out a sleeve and watched hairline cracks brighten under the sun, while a thin, gritty scrape echoed across the puddle long after he stepped onto the stone.
Translation
