Thin lines of slip had dried along the splash pan before Drake eased onto the low stool, knees bent and elbows loose. Niall, at the same workstation, angled his back straight and braced his heel on the foot-pedal zone. Between their stools, one spray bottle had been placed for the whole class, its trigger still damp. Drake leaned forward to centre a block whose outer skin carried a faint frost crust from the cool room air, while Niall balanced a board cut into an octagon for trimming an earlier bowl. The wheel’s hum travelled through both seats; each vibration nudged their spines and reminded them of the shared water they would soon need.
Momentum built. Drake pressed both thumbs inward, trying to erase a wobble, yet a spherical dimple swelled where an air pocket spun under the surface. A quick squeeze of the spray bottle could have softened the clay, but Niall’s hand was already on the trigger as he lowered the rim of his wide piece. Drake paused, shoulders tight, then slid sideways, scooped a handful of grey water from the basin, and let it melt over his palms. The improvised moisture changed the contour of his vase just enough; slip thinned, and the clay rose higher. Niall, noticing the swivel, lifted the bottle toward Drake without words, but Drake shook his head and tilted his form in thanks. Their silent exchange freed Niall to keep misting, while Drake relied on basin water and steady pressure.
Minutes later, the kiln room door opened; warm air drifted out and began to stiffen every exposed wall. Drake dropped his speed, palms gliding slower to match the thickening skin. Niall shifted his posture too, trimming loop angled lower so the blade met the clay before it cooled. A quiet cooperation settled into rhythm: two bodies moving at different tempos yet sharing one narrow space. From the doorway, the paired wheels looked like twin gears inside a much larger machine, and the shine of wet clay shrank to twin silver coins against the wider studio floor.
