A shallow dent on the feeder platform lay bare, the usual mound of sunflower fragments completely gone. Lyle leaned forward from the warm bench and lifted the paper bag to check its weight, the musty smell of printed paper mixing with the grassy scent that drifted up from the ground scatter zone. The feeder, whose eco-friendly design used reclaimed cedar, had been built like a tiny stage; every visit by sparrows turned the post into an earthy-smelling performance where husks cracked and a nut-oil aroma burst into the air. Today Lyle waited for a shy goldfinch while his older cousin Nolan read nearby, the faint medicinal tang of hand gel still lingering on Nolan’s sleeve. Lyle poured a thin line of seed, but when he set the bag down a hidden tear widened; a sour, floury stream slid across the bench seat, fell onto the grass, and rolled toward the path. If a jogger trod on those kernels, birds would scatter again and the venue would stay empty.
He pinched the paper, yet another crunchy string of seed broke free, dusting the air with a chalky taste that reached his tongue. The overspill struck the feeder’s wooden edge, bounced like tiny beads, and some grains tumbled into the water dish, leaving a faint vinegar-sharp swirl on the surface. A breeze carried the metallic tang of the distant drinking fountain and pushed more kernels toward the dish; the cascade threatened to waste the supply before the goldfinch even left the tree’s natural auditorium of branches. Lyle slid the torn corner under Nolan’s metal drink bottle, its cool base pressing enough to block the gap without fresh noise. The bag’s quaint design now included that improvised clamp, but at least the flow slowed to single grains. Overhead, a blue tit darted from branch to branch; its wings beat steadily across the leaf line, carrying it closer to the quiet platform.
Translation
