English Original
A half-finished cup trembled on the narrow counter, the straw still swaying while Seth eased the small ladle back into the pearl pot, releasing a warm, doughy perfume that floated over roasted-leaf steam. Just above the glass partition—fogged so thick it looked like a living terrarium—a pale gecko clung beside the heat strip, its belly pressed flat against the pane where the menu board’s light source warmed the glass.
Luke slid into the brewing station. Honeyed oolong and smoky black tea mingled in the air, yet the syrup pumps showed only smeared ink; condensation had blurred every letter. He had wiped one label already, but the damp paper peeled and stuck to his thumb, leaving a sweet, metallic tang on his skin. Two fresh order slips fluttered near the pickup shelf: one called for extra sweetness, the other none at all. Luke gripped the first pump—its handle moved with a slow, sticky drag that smelled of burnt caramel and molasses. The next pump sprang back quickly, throwing a light floral scent toward him. He tried switching the cracked plastic labels, yet the syrup dripped onto the rubber mat and glued the scraps in place. Beside him, the gecko crept higher, toes spreading with effortless grip across the wet glass.
Luke’s fingers paused. The very resistance that delayed him also separated the syrups. Dense brown sugar forced the handle to crawl forward; thin honey let it sway back fast. Without glancing outside to the veranda where late sun baked the paving stones, he filled the less-ice cup with three slow strokes of the heavy pump, then tipped the quick, fragrant syrup into the extra-ice cup. A cool plume of milk rolled through each drink, turning the tea creamy tan while starchy steam from the pearl pot curled above the shaker. Finally, he nudged the gecko’s pane gently with a straw; the creature slipped toward the ceiling lamps, leaving a faint arrow of dry tracks across the dew-covered glass.
Translation
