A wooden spoon clacked against a ceramic bowl, and Glen steadied his grip on the squeeze bottle beside the bar counter. The dessert had been ordered by a table near the patio, and he aimed to draw the line of deep-red sauce across the pale tart before the servers returned. Sara hovered nearby, sipping tea from a slim porcelain cup; the amber surface rippled when a chair leg scraped over the tiled floor. That rough scrape proved a turning point. Glen’s hand twitched, the bottle jerked, and a bright streak of sauce splashed onto the trailing basil plant hanging above the pass-through.
Sticky drops slid along the ochre stem, leaving a shining path that reached the soil. Ants—tiny, copper-brown specks—emerged, following the sweetness toward the counter. A curious glance flickered between Glen and Sara as the insects marched over the order chits. One chit slipped free, drifted onto a rack of chilled glasses, and the nearest pair rolled off their stack. Their rims kissed the warm teapot waiting for refills; the vessel rocked once, and a ribbon of tea spilled down the bar, pooling around cork coasters without scalding anyone. Conversation hums wavered, yet no guest noticed the slow parade of causes and effects.
Glen lunged, wedging a folded dessert menu between the teapot and the edge before more glasses could slide. The noise paused; movement slowed. Silver tumblers were being restacked by Sara even as she lifted her cup, ready to give a toast to their narrow save. He had already hoped the scene would quiet, and his shoulders loosened while he brushed stray ants toward the planter’s rim. The chain reaction thinned—first sauce, then insects, then rolling glass—each link smaller than the last until only warmth lingered. A thin ribbon of steam drifted above the blocked pot.
Translation
