The boardwalk over the brook looked dry, but the marker post on the far bank wobbled in the breeze. Miles stepped onto the honey-coloured planks, Lily waiting behind him, and the warm smell of pine mixed with the sharper scent of running water. Beyond the trunks a sunlit floodplain gleamed in soft copper light, yet the pair only cared about the tiny arrow half hidden by lichen. Miles had already wedged a flat pebble beside the post so the arrow faced the correct path. The gap still shifted, so he lifted a second stone from the gravel edge; the surplus weight pressed against the first, and the post seemed steadier for a moment.

A flare of midday sun broke through the canopy and struck the damp moss around the base. Thinking the heat might dry the joint and lock it tight, Miles packed a thumb-sized lump of amber resin against the moss. The resin softened quickly; the warmth loosened it further, and steam curled up like escaping breath. As the moss warmed, it shrank, the two stones slipped, and the entire post twitched. The jolt knocked Miles’s metal bottle, painted with swirling sealife shapes, off the plank. The bottle rolled down the slight slope, hit a beam, and its cap popped; a small torrent of cool water gushed across the boards and splashed into the brook below.

Seeing the sliding stones, Miles crouched and hooked his fingers under the sticky resin. With one short pull, he peeled the resin free and tossed it into the shallow current, where it bobbed away like dull amber glass. Cool brook water soaked the remaining moss, the fibers swelled again, and the two stones jammed firmly against the post without the softened layer in between. Miles leaned back, hands streaked with golden sap, while Lily crossed to join him. Thin ripples spread downstream beneath the boards, carrying tiny leaves toward the bend where the path disappeared among rust-coloured ferns.

看見石頭滑動，麥爾斯蹲下，用指尖勾住黏稠樹脂。短短一下，他把樹脂扯下，丟進淺水裡，樹脂像暗色玻璃般漂走。涼水浸濕剩餘的苔蘚，纖維再次膨脹，兩塊石頭在沒有軟層阻隔下牢牢夾住柱腳。麥爾斯向後坐，雙手沾滿金色樹脂痕跡，莉莉也跨到對岸。薄薄水紋在木板下游向下游，把細葉帶向彎處，那裡的步道在鏽色蕨叢間消失。
