The apples filled only the left side of a thin, cloudy bag, while the right side still fluttered empty beneath the cool spray nozzles. A sugary tang hung around the fruit stand, mixing with the sharp brine wafting from a nearby tray of rinsed seaweed. Gemma pinched the bag’s slick edge and slid two more red globes inside; their skins carried a faint cider scent. Nolan, sleeves of his blue fleece pushed to the elbows, kept a steady grip on the cart whose front wheel nudged a floor seam with a dull thud. Their approach looked simple: weigh apples, then give the seaweed its own wrap. Yet the final produce bag had been torn from the roll earlier by another shopper, and only the one in Gemma’s fingers remained.
She tied the apples with a twist, trapping a handful of orchard fragrance inside the thin plastic. When she placed the load on the scale, the metal plate dipped and printed a barcode; damp vapor rose where cold air met warm skins. As the siblings lifted the bag away, condensation dripped onto the uncovered seaweed tub, leaving a saline film on Nolan’s fleece cuff. He raised an eyebrow and shifted the tub closer to the scale. No spare bags waited; the spindle showed only a cardboard core that smelled of dry paper. Gemma loosened her fresh knot, folded the bag’s top half outward, and created a new pocket above the fruit. Nolan slid the seaweed container into that pocket; its iodine bite blended with the apples’ sweetness. The shared bag bulged in two uneven layers, but both items sat secure enough for the slow journey to checkout.
They rolled forward. The locked wheel jerked once more, tilting the double-filled bundle, yet Nolan steadied it before anything slipped. At the same moment, near the bakery counter, their mother tapped two crusty loaves together, and warm steam curled above the glass shelf.
Translation
