English Original
Five fish-shaped lanterns swayed in the same gentle arc above the pond. “Who placed them in perfect rows?” Dale asked, the buttery-sweet scent of grilled corn drifting past his nose while Fern’s lantern brushed his shoulder and left a faint papery glue smell on his jacket. A nearby vendor stirred puffed quinoa in hot syrup, releasing a nutty steam that mixed with the grassy aroma of crushed leaves underfoot; the blended smell reminded Dale of a closed garden shed after rain, wood and soil merging in the air.
At the water’s edge the pair paused. The pond carried sharp metallic hints from coins tossed earlier, and its surface mirrored every colour. Dale’s round red lantern glowed unevenly, a bright line escaping through a slim tear that had been invisible at the craft table. Fern tilted her star lantern and saw one loose point sagging, warmed by the LED and giving off a faint chemical paste odour. A shaggy dog trotted beside its family, its damp fur sending out a wet-wool smell before it sat to watch. The last spare strip of orange tissue lay between Dale and Fern on the packed earth; the strip still held the minty scent of the volunteer’s cleaning wipe. Both reached for it, then froze, aware of their silent alliance and the single resource. If Fern had carried extra paper, the choice would have been easy.
Fern lifted her hand first in a voluntary retreat, thumb already stained green from food-colour paste, and pointed toward Dale’s wider gap. He shook his head, then tore the strip lengthwise; the division released more glue scent and a thin wisp of citrus from the tissue dye. A gust carrying cinnamon from candied fruit stands fluttered the halves. Fern pinned one piece over her star point while Dale folded the other. The last daylight slipped away, and battery lights became the only illumination as the dog sniffed the new citrus smell. Dale kept pressing the soft tissue strip across the glowing seam.
Translation
